Zootopia Tops Allegiant to Win Box Office for Third Consecutive Weekend
Posted on March 20, 2016
Zootopia topped the box office again this weekend. It made $38 million to bring its total domestic gross over the $200 million mark. This is the third consecutive box office win for the animated film that features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, J.K. Simmons and Idris Elba.
The Shailene Woodley led film The Divergent Series: Allegiant opened with $29 million to finish second. This was much lower than the box office debut for Insurgent, which made $64 million during its opening weekend in March 2015. The film has a B CinemaScore.
Allegiant was followed by Miracles from Heaven, which opened in third. The film starring Kylie Rogers and Jennifer Garner is based on the memoir by Christy Beam about her daughter's near-death experience. The film has a perfect A+ CinemaScore.
Miracles from Heaven was followed by 10 Cloverfield Lane, which made $12.5 million during its second weekend in theaters. Deadpool finished fifth during its sixth weekend in theaters. It has now made $340 million and is the top grossing film of 2016 so far.
Deadpool was followed by London Has Fallen, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, The Perfect Match, The Brothers Grimsby and The Revenant. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still playing in theaters. However, the record-setting film made less than $1 million during its 14th weekend in theaters. The DVD and Blu-ray will be released early next month.
The winning streak for Zootopia will end at three with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opening this coming weekend. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, I Saw the Light and The Invitation also open this weekend.
