Wonder Woman Breaks Records With $100 Million Opening
Posted on June 4, 2017
Wonder Woman easily topped the box office this weekend with its $100 million opening. Gal Gadot returns in the title role. The film also stars Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright. The film has an A CinemaScore. The film set records for the biggest opening for a female director (Patty Jenkins). It is also the biggest box office for a female-led comic book superhero movie.
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie took the second spot with its $23.5 million opening. They were obviously planning sequels with that title and the opening take should encourage them to make more. The DreamWorks Animation film was directed by Rob Letterman and features the voices of Kevin Hart, Thomas Middleditch and Ed Helms. It has a B+ CinemaScore.
Captain Underpants was followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Baywatch, Alien: Covenant, Everything, Everything, Snatch and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. Pirates plunged over 65% from the prior weekend. You can find the weekend's box office chart here.
Wonder Woman is off to a terrific start but it will find it difficult to repeat at #1 next weekend with The Mummy starring Tom Cruise arriving. Other opening films this weekend include Megan Leavey, It Comes and Night and The Hero.
