Wolverine Slashes Competition in Huge Opening Weekend
Posted on May 3, 2009
X-Men Origins: Wolverine was expected to be the #1 film this weekend but the near $90 million weekend was a surprise. Wolverine made $87 million, which is more than most films have made all year. The opening makes lead Hugh Jackman an even bigger star.
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, starring Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey, did well for the romantic comedy genre making $15 million. Obsessed - last week's #1 film - fell to #3. Zac Efron's hit 17 Again is still hanging around. It made another $6 million to bring its total take to date to nearly $50 million. The film has made another $27 million overseas. Word-of-mouth must be helping 17 Again, as people share how funny this film is. In fifth place was Monsters Vs. Aliens. The documentary Earth is still drawing moviegoers despite showing in fewer theatres. Earth made over $4 million during the weekend.
