White House Celebrates Same-Sex Marriage Ruling With Rainbow Colors
Posted on June 26, 2015
The White House is lit up with the colors of the rainbow tonight to celebrate the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage is now legal in all fifty states. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that same-sex marriage is a right under the constitution.
The New York Times reports that Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority, "No longer may this liberty be denied. No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were."
Same-sex marriage had already been approved in many states. The Supreme Court decision makes gay marriage legal in the 13 states that banned it. Gays in many of the banned states - including Michigan and Texas - starting getting married immediately after the Supreme Court's decision was announced.
President Obama spoke in support of the decision on the @potus Twitter. Obama tweeted, "Today is a big step in our march toward equality. Gay and lesbian couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else." He also used the hashtag #LoveWins. The tweet already has over 400,000 retweets and over 300,000 favorites.
