Veronica Mars to Open in Theaters and On Demand on Same Day
Posted on February 22, 2014
The Wall Street Journal reports that the upcoming Veronica Mars movie will be released simultaneously in theaters and on demand. On March 14, the film will be showed in 270 AMC Theaters nationwide and will be released on Time Warner Cable's on demand service. It will also be available for purchase or rental on Amazon.com and iTunes. Veronica Mars stars Kristen Bell as the teenage detective who can solve any crime. The film picks up the story now that she's a lawyer.
This is the first time a major studio has distributed a movie both in theaters and on demand at the same time in the U.S. Major theater chains require a 90 window from theater release to on demand, so usually only films that aren't expected to do well are released on demand on the same day as the theater release. But Warner Bros. got around the ban by paying AMC, the second largest U.S. theater chain, to rent 260 screens nationwide. It will also play in ten independent theaters.
We cannot wait to see Veronica Mars back in action. The only question is whether to see it in the theaters or have a home viewing party. Decisions, decisions.
