Tomorrowland Wins Memorial Day Weekend Box Office
Posted on May 25, 2015
Tomorrowland won the Memorial Day weekend box office. It opened with a $32.9 million weekend which was just enough to fend off Pitch Perfect 2. Tomorrowland made $41.7 million for the four day weekend. The overall weekend was very slow for the Memorial Day weekend.
Pitch Perfect 2 had a strong second weekend in theaters. It made $30.8 million for the 3-day weekend and has now made a very impressive $126 million after just two weekends in theaters. Mad Max: Fury Road made $24.8 million in its second weekend in theaters. It has now made $88 million after two weekends.
The Poltergeist remake had a solid opening. It made $22.6 million for a per theater average of nearly $7,000 per theater. Avengers: Age of Ulton added $21.6 million to bring its domestic gross to over $400 million after four weekends in theaters. It is probably not going to be able to get close to the $623 million the first Avengers movie made.
Avengers was followed by The Age of Adaline, Hot Pursuit, Furious 7 and Far from the Madding Crowd. You can find the box office chart for the weekend here on Box Office Mojo.
San Andreas starring Dwayne Johnson is the big disaster film opening this coming weekend. It is like to win the box office as it does not have much competition since Tomorrowland did not have a monster opening.
