Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wins Weekend Box Office

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, starring Megan Fox, won the box office this weekend. The film made $65 million to score the fourth biggest August opening. The successful reboot resulted in the quick announcement of a sequel, which is set to be released on June 3, 2016.

Guardians of the Galaxy followed up its huge $94 million opening last weekend with a strong second weekend. The film added $41.5 million to bring its total gross to $175 million. Guardians was follwed by Into the Storm, a tornado disaster film. Into the Storm made $18 million. We did not see a lot of promotion for this movie.

Into the Storm was followed by The Hundred-Foot Journey, which stars Helen Mirren and Charlotte LeBon. It opened with $11.1 million. Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson, made another $9 million during its third weekend in theaters to bring it total gross to $97 million.

Step Up All In opened in sixth. The dance film had a modest $6.5 million opening and averaged about $3,100 per theater. Step Up was followed by Hercules, Get On Up, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Planes: Fire & Rescue.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is fading from theaters and probably won't have enough left to catch Captain America: The Winter Soldier for the year's box office lead. Transformers has made about $243 million and still need about $17 million to pass Captain America. However, it only made $590,000 this weekend so it looks like it will run out of gas before catching up to the Captain.
