The SpongeBob Movie Tops Weekend Box Office

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water made $56 million easily top the box office this weekend. This was a much bigger opening than the first SpongeBob film, which made $32 million in November 2004. The film has a B Cinemascore.
SpongeBob ended American Sniper's impressive streak of topping the box office at three. The movie added another $24 million during its 7th weekend in theaters to bring its total gross to $282 million. It is now the third top grossing film of 2014.
American Sniper was followed by Jupiter Ascending, which opened with $19 million. It was a small domestic opening for the big budget science fiction film starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis and Eddie Redmayne. The film has a B- Cinemascore. Jupiter Ascending was followed by the fantasy film, Seventh Son, which finally arrived in theaters. Audiences did not turn out in large numbers for the film. It made $7 million in 2,875 theaters. However, Variety notes that the film has made $82 million at the international box office.
Seventh Son was followed by Paddington, Project Almanac, The Imitation Game and The Wedding Ringer. You can view the box office chart for the weekend here. Fifty Shades of Grey and Kingsman arrive in theaters this coming weekend.
