The Sims The Movie?

Posted on May 24, 2007

There may be a movie based on The Sims coming to theaters in the near future. Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox is going to make a movie based on The Sims, a popular computer game franchise from Electronic Arts that simulates real life.

Variety says Brian Lynch will write the screenplay.

Sims studio head Rod Humble told Variety, "The Sims has done an interactive version of an old story, which is what it's like to have infinite power and how do you deal with it. Given that that's an old story, you can imagine how easily that would translate to traditional story telling."

How are they going to make a movie about a game that simulates real life. A movie that simulates real life? A simulator of a simulator? The screenwriter is going to be under some heavy pressure to come up with a novel idea for this film. Focusing on the infinite power concept that SIMS Studio head Rod Humble mentioned may be key to developing a good script for this movie. Another question is which Sims will be the focus of the film because The Sims coming out in September for the Wii are a much cutesier version of the Sims than we have seen in the past. We are also curious as to whether the dreaded guinea pig virus will be in the Sims motion picture.

Update 3-10-15: Apparently, our concerns about how The Sims would translate into a motion picture were correct. Eight years have passed and the film has never been produced. In 2008 producer John Davis described a Sims filmed inspired by Weird Science but no film has yet come to fruition.
