The Resurgence of 3-D
Posted on March 11, 2008
3-D movies are back, in a big way. 10,000 theaters will be converted to 3-D and more studios are going to release films in the format that worked so well for films as diverse as Beowulf and Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.
USA Today reports that DreamWorks Animation SKG CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg unveiled a 3-D clip of Monsters vs. Aliens at ShoWest. Katzenberg said, "It is nothing less than the greatest innovation that has happened for all of us in the movie business since the advent of color 70 years ago. Now it's our chance to deliver something that is far superior than anything that can be done in the home."
The article says 3-D conversion for these theaters will cost as much as $700 million. The software and hardware to broadcast 3-D films on these screens costs about $25,000 per screen per year. This is part of the reason why theaters charge more for 3-D films.
We love seeing films in 3-D. It's such an immersive experience. Whether it's a dragon flying right at you or Miley Cyrus belting out her hits while the tweens scream all around you (ok, we could have done without that) it makes for a truly exciting moviegoing experience.
