The Martian Tops Weekend Box Office

The Martian starring Matt Damon won the box office this weekend. The film is about an astronaut who ends up stranded on the Red Planet. The movie made $55 million which is just less than the $55.8 million October record set by Gravity in 2013.
The Martian has a an A CinemaScore. It has also made over $100 million worldwide to date. The Martian was followed by Hotel Transylvania 2 which had a very strong second weekend in theaters. The box office for the animated film fell just 31.9% from its opening weekend. It made another $33 million to bring its total gross after two weekends to $90 million.
Hotel Transylvania 2 was followed by Sicario, which opened to a wide release during its third weekend in theaters and made $12 million. The film starring Emily Blunt as an FBI agent caught up in the war against drugs has an A- CinemaScore.
Sicario was followed by The Intern, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Black Mass, Everest, The Visit, War Room and The Perfect Guy. Another opening film this weekend was The Walk starring Joseph Gordeon-Levitt as high-wire artist Philippe Petit who walked between the World Trade Center towers. The film made just $1.6 million in 448 theaters.
