Posted on December 7, 2014
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 won the box office for the third straight weekend. Mockingjay Part 1 made $21.6 during its third weekend in theaters to bring its total box office gross to over $257 million.
After just three weekends in theaters Mockingjay is already just $75 million away from catching Guardians of the Galaxy, which has made the most money domestically of any film this year at $332 million. This weekend overall was very weak. Even with its $21 million sum Mockingjay still finished over $10 million above the second place finisher, Penguins of Madagascar. Penguins was followed by Horrible Bosses 2, which added $8.6 million during its second weekend in theaters.
Horribles Bosses 2 was followed by Big Hero 6, Interstellar, Dumb and Dumber To, The Theory of Everything and Gone Girl. The long running Gone Girl is now in its tenth weekend and has made over $162 million. Gone Girl was followed by The Pyramid, which was the only new wide release film this weekend. The horror film failed to generate much interest and made $1.35 million in 589 theaters for a low $2,292 per theater average.
