The Help Wins Weekend Box Office
Posted on August 21, 2011
The Help was a surprise to win the box office this weekend. The film, which made $20.5 million, beat both Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night to take the #1 spot during its second week in theaters. The film, which stars Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Emma Stone, is based on a novel by Kathryn Stockett.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes continues to do well in theaters. It made another $16.3 million during its third week in theaters to finish second and bring its box office total to $133 million. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World opened in third and made $12 million.
The Conan the Barbarian remake, starring Jason Momoa, did not do as well as expected. It finished fourth and made just $10 million despite showing in over 3,000 theaters. The Fright Night remake, starring Colin Farrell, also did not do as well as expected. It made $7.9 million and finished 6th behind The Smurfs. Anne Hathaday's One Day also had a weak opening. It made $5.1 million and opened in 9th place. You can view the complete box office report on boxofficemojo.com.
