Tetris Science Fiction Motion Picture Trilogy in the Works
Posted on May 30, 2016
Tetris is being made into a movie. The film will be in the science fiction genre and is apparently part of a trilogy. The news broke at the Cannes film festival.
Deadline reports that the project has an $80 million budget and will be led by China-U.S. co-production under Threshold Global Studios.
Producer Larry Kasanoff told Deadline that the film is "not at all what you think; it will be a cool surprise." Tetris is essentially a puzzle game so morphing it into a science fiction film will take some creative thinking. A faux trailer with giant invading blocks falling from the sky has over 2 million views.
The creative faux trailer from Dark Pixel says, "The invasion is beginning. It is inevitable. You created them, you can destroy them! I did not create Tetris, I was but the messenger. Tell me how to stop them. This is an extinction level event."
Tetris was a popular arcade game during the 80s. It has found a second life in the mobile world. The image above comes from Electronic Arts which has Tetris games available for all mobile devices including the Kindle, iPad, iPhone, Android Devices, Windows Mobile and more.
Update 7-20-19: Three years later and still no Tetris movie? There is a listing on IMDB for an "Untitled Tetris Sci-fi Project." It lists Michael Apostolina as the writer and describes the film as being set in the year 30XX with Tetris-like spaceships that travel at light speed. They are called Tetroids.
