Taken 3 Dominates Weekend Box Office

Taken 3 easily won the box office weekend. The thriller starring Liam Neeson made $40.4 million to set the second highest January opening of all time. The film was directed by Olivier Megaton from a Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen script. The film also stars Forest Whitaker, Famke Janssen and Maggic Grace.

Selma made $11.2 million with a good $5,140 per theater average as it moved into wide release and over 2,100 more theaters. Selma was followed by Into the Woods, which added $9.75 million during its third weekend in theaters to push its domestic gross over the $100 million mark. Into the Woods and Selma each have Golden Globes nominations.

Into the Woods was followed by The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which made $9.4 million during its fourth weekend in theaters to bring its domestic gross to $236.5 million. Five Armies was followed by Unbroken, The Imitation Game and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 finished in tenth and added $3.75 million to bring its domestic gross to $329.5 million after 8 weeks. The film is now less than $4 million shy of passing Guardians of the Galaxy to become the top earning film of 2014. You can view the complete box office report for the weekend here.
