Suicide Squad Sets August Record With $135 Million Opening

Suicide Squad easily won the box office this weekend with a monster $135 million opening. The opening is a record for the month of August. The star studded film includes Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
The opening is a much needed win for DC Comics. The film is a hit despite harsh reviews from critics. It has a B+ CinemaScore. The film written and directed by David Ayer has also made another $132 million overseas.
Suicide Squad was followed by Jason Bourne which added another $22.7 million during its second weekend. Bourne has now passed the $100 million mark. Bourne was followed by Bad Moms, The Secret Life of Pets and Star Trek Beyond.
Nine Lives opened in sixth and made $6.5 million. In the comedy a business tycoon played by Kevin Spacey ends up trapped in the body of a cat he purchased at a pet shop run by Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken). Nine Lives has a B+ CinemaScore.
Nine Lives was followed by Lights Out, Nerve and Ghostbusters. You can find the complete box office score for the weekend here.
Pete's Dragon will have the big challenge of preventing Suicide Squad from repeating as the number one film next weekend. Other opening films include Florence Foster Jenkins, Sausage Party, Hell or High Water and Anthropoid.
