Saturday Night Live Takes Aim at George R.R. Martin

Posted on April 7, 2014

Saturday Night Live did a very funny bit about Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin and his infamous slowness in writing the next book in the Song of Fire and Ice series. On Weekend Update, Cecily Strong interviews Martin (Bobby Moynihan).

She asked Martin what's taking so long. Martin replies that he can't write the book until he has the title. The two he's considering are: A Whisper of Yells or A Bunch of Clocks. He complains about how huge the world he created is, noting that it's not easy naming 1,000 characters. Sure the names all start out cool like Daenerys Targaryen, but after awhile all he could muster up was Jamie or Robb. He says he's so burned out that The White Walkers "were named after a white guy walked past me."

When asked how he got so far behind, Martin replies, "I spend 35 hours a week writing, but it's mostly fan fiction." It's less racy than the show, and he is the main character in it. As for his sneak peek about the next book in the series, he says, "It's 3,000 pages long and everyone you love dies."

Sounds about right to us. Take a look:
