Smurfs Tie With Cowboys and Aliens at Box Office
Posted on August 1, 2011
Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs tied at the box office this weekend. Studio estimates for both films are $36.2 million. Us Weekly Senior Editor Bradley Jacobs told CBS News that teen boys missing from theaters is what kept Cowboys & Aliens from performing as well as it was expected to. People are very familiar with Smurfs and Neil Patrick Harris is very well liked. This enabled The Smurfs to do well despite dreadful reviews.
Captain America had a strong second week in theaters and brought in another $24.9 million to finish third. Deathly Hallows Part 2 came in fourth and added $21.9 million to finish fourth and bring its box office total to over $318 million. The final film in the Harry Potter series has now passed the $1 billion mark worldwide. Crazy, Stupid, Love opened in fifth and made $19.3 million.
