Rio Slays Scream 4 to Win Weekend Box Office
Posted on April 17, 2011
Rio, an animated film about macaws smuggled from the jungle near Rio de Janeiro into the midwest, easily won the box office this weekend. Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg provide the voices of two of birds. The film made around $40 million.
Scream 4 did not do as well as anticipated. The horror sequel fell short of $20 million despite some decent reviews from critics and an impressive cast that included Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Hayden Panettiere and Emma Roberts.
Hop fell to third place, but added another $11 million to its box office total. Soul Surfer and Hanna both had decent second weeks in theaters and made another $7 million.
Another movie opening in theaters this weekend was The Conspirator. The Robert Redford film, starring James McAvoy, re-examines Abraham Lincoln's murder and tells the story of Mary Surratt, who was convicted of taking part in the conspiracy to assassinate the president. The Conspirator made nearly $4 million despite opening in just 707 theaters.
