Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Tops Memorial Weekend Box Office
Posted on May 29, 2017
Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales easily topped the box office over the Memorial Day weekend. It opened with $62 million for a 14,541 per theater average. The film also stars Javier Bardem and Geoffrey Rush.It has an A- CinemaScore.
The big story this weekend was that the new Baywatch movie did not perform well. It made $18.1 million with a low $4,963 per theater opening average. Baywatch finished third behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Both Pirates and Guardians have strong comedic elements in addition to the fantasy/science fiction. This likely hurt Baywatch as it lost viewers to both films. The Pirates 5 movie also had undead sharks and even Zac Efron's impressive abs can't be that.
Baywatch was followed by Alien: Covenant, Everything, Everything, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Snatch, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and The Bossy Baby. It was not a great Memorial Day box office overall. You can view the chart for the weekend here.
Next weekend has the arrival of the DC Comics summer blockbuster, Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot. It is expected to top the box office. Another film that could do well is the first Captain Underpants animated film.
