Oprah and Stephen Colbert Talk Faith, Trade Favorite Bible Verses

Posted on October 17, 2015

Oprah Winfrey was a guest on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to talk about her upcoming television series event Belief which explores religions, faith, spirituality and belief around the world. Colbert asked Oprah if she thinks there is a difference between belief and faith.

Oprah says there is difference. Many people don't think they have faith of an kind, but when questioned they reveal that they do believe in different things even if they don't call it a deity. Faith, she says, is " is knowing that no matter what, you’re going to be OK." Oprah revealed that when she was in third grade, they used to call her the Preacher Girl because she would always spout bible verses.

Colbert wasn't going to let that opportunity pass and asked her what her favorite Bible verse. She wanted to know his first, so he obliged citing from Matthew 6:25-34. He said, "I like it because Jesus says, 'So I say to you, do not worry, for who among you by worrying could change a hair on his head, or add a cubit to the span of his life?' He then joked that it's an actual command, so you must not worry or you are disobeying God.

Oprah's favorite Bible passage is from Psalms 37:4 which says, "Delight thyself in the Lord. He will give you the desires of your heart." Colbert then cracked a joke about how King David was "all about the delighting himself," which was both hilarious and unexpected. Oprah explained what the verse says to her": "Now what that says to me is 'Lord' has a wide range. What is 'Lord'? Compassion, love, forgiveness, kindness. So you delight yourself in those virtues where the character of the Lord is revealed. Delight thyself in goodness, delight thyself in love, kindness, and compassion, and you will receive the desires of your heart. It says to me, if you focus on being a force for good, good things will come."

Oprah says this is a universal truth as this rule is also reflected in the Third Law of Motion, karma, and the Golden Rule.

Belief will air seven nights in a row beginning tomorrow night, Sunday, October 18th at 8 p.m. ET/PT on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. Take a look:
