No Good Deed Wins Weekend Box Office

Posted on September 15, 2014

No Good Deed won the box office this weekend. The thriller, starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, made $24.5 million in 2,175 theaters for a very strong $11,264 per theater average. We loved Taraji in Person of Interest. No Good Dead was followed by Dolphin Tale 2, which opened with $16.5 million. This was a couple million less than the first film made in 2011, but still a good opening for the family film. The original cast, including Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman and Harry Connick Jr., returned for the sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy slipped to third place after holding the number one spot for several weekends. It added another $8 million to its box office gross and fell only 22% from the weekend before. The film has now made $305 million domestically and is the top grossing film of the year. It has made about $50 million more than the second top grossing film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Guardians was followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Let's Be Cops. The Drop, actor James Gandolfini's final film, opened in sixth and made $4.2 million, with a good $5,192 per theater average.

The Drop was followed by If I Stay, The November Man, The Giver and The Hundred-Foot Journey. You can see the box office chart for the weekend here.

The Maze Runner opens in theaters this coming weekend. It will be interesting to see if another film based on a dystopian novel can top the charts. It will have to top Liam Neeson in A Walk Among the Tombstones and Dan Stevens in The Guest to claim first place.
