Nickelodeon Folds Nick and Nick Jr. Magazines

Posted on June 14, 2009

Nickelodeon is folding its print magazines, Nick and Nick Jr.. A big reason for the closures is that ad pages at the magazines have plunged this year.

A report in Mediaweek says ad pages for Nickelodeon fell 27% in 2008. It had a rate base of 950,000 last year.

ComicsBeat says the magazine has a staff of 30 people. The magazine was known as a great venue for indie cartoonists.

Nickelodeon blamed the recession and the struggling magazine business for the need to end the titles. Cyma Zarghami, president of Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group, said in a statement: "As I am sure everyone knows, the magazine publishing industry as a whole is severely challenged, and because of that, we have decided to exit the magazine business and will cease publishing them by the end of this year."

Here's a look back at Nickelodeon Magazine from Nicktendo called "The Unappreciated Genius of Nickelodeon Magazine."
