Neighbors Wins Weekend Box Office With $51 Million Opening

Posted on May 11, 2014

Neighbors won the weekend box office this Mother's Day weekend. The film made $51 million and prevented The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from winning two weekends. This is great news for Neighbors stars Zac Efron and Seth Rogen. Rose Byrne has now starred in two hit comedies, Neighbors and Bridesmaids. This could bode well for her upcoming 2015 spy comedy with Melissa McCarthy, directed by Paul Feig. Neighbors had both good reviews and strong buzz. The $51 million is very impressive considering this is an R-rated comedy.

The Amazing Spider Man 2 made $37.2 million during its second weekend in theaters. This was nearly a 60% drop from the prior weekend, but still a large total for the film's second weekend. It has now made nearly $150 million in the U.S. after two weekends.

The Other Woman added another $9.2 million during its third weekend in theaters. It will followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Rio 2. Rio 2 was followed by two new films: Mom's Night Out and Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return. The animated Dorothy's Return was somewhat of a bomb. It made only $3.7 million in 2575 theaters for an opening of just $1,439 per theater. This was despite an A CinemaScore. Critics panned the film, but audiences loved it. Adam Markovitz for Entertainment Weekly says, "the bricks are still yellow, but the road doesn't lead anywhere special."
