Moonlight Wins Best Picture After La La Land First Named Winner in Bizarre Oscars Mix-up
Posted on February 27, 2017
Moonlight won Best Picture at the 2017 Oscars. The win was a big surprise because La La Land was first incorrectly announced as the winner. In the bizarre mix-up the correct winner was not announced until after the La La Land cast and team was already up on stage accepting the award.
It turns out that Warren Beatty was given the wrong card. He is seen holding the "Actress in a Leading Role" card in this image shared by ABC News on Twitter. Pricewaterhouse Cooper also issued a statement that Beatty had been given the wrong category card. This explains why Beatty looked confused when he was looking at the card. He handed it to Faye Dunaway who announced La La Land as the winner. Beatty then reappeared during La La Land's acceptance speech to announce the real winner. La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz was gracious when handing the Oscar back.
Here is Emma Stone's shocked reaction that says it all. She said, "Oh my God."

Jimmy Kimmel said later, "Let's remember, it's just an awards show. I mean, we hate to see people disappointed but the good news is, we got to see some extra speeches. We had some great movies. I knew I would screw this show up, I really did."
#OscarFail is now trending on Twitter this morning because of the mix-up. Here's a video that captures all of last night's confusion:
