Posted on June 30, 2013
Monsters University won the box office for the second consecutive weekend. It made $46.18 million to bring its total domestic gross to $171 million. Monsters U was followed closely by The Heat, which had a strong $40 million weekend opening.
The Heat, an R-rated buddy comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, managed to fend off White House Down. Brad Pitt's World War Z had a strong second weekend, adding nearly $30 million to bring its domestic gross to $123 million.
White House Down debuted in fourth and made $25.7 million, which was disappointing considering its $150 million budget. Man of Steel finished fifth in its third weekend and theaters and added another $20 million in ticket sales. Man of Steel has already passed the half a billion mark worldwide. In the U.S., Man of Steel has made nearly $250 million, but has a ways to go to catch Iron Man 3, which leads the year with a domestic gross of $405 million.
