M.I.A. Jimmy Video Features Kali and Little Atari-like Characters
Posted on September 3, 2007
Below is the music video for "Jimmy" from M.I.A. It was directed by Nezar Khamal. The video seems to be channeling Bollywood, pop music and the Hindu goddess Kali.
The little animated characters in different colors make for a nice Atari-like touch. "Jimmy" is a song of M.I.A.'s recently released album Kala. M.I.A. is the stage name of Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam. Wikipedia says Maya is a vocalist, songwriter, composer, record producer and visual artist of Sri Lankan Tamil origin.
M.I.A. was recently touring North America with Gwen Stefani and has recorded with Missy Elliott and Timbaland. They went a little overboard on the flashing colors on M.I.A.'s website but at least the blog is readable.
