The Maze Runner Wins Weekend Box Office

The Maze Runner won the box office this weekend. The film, adapted from James Dashner's dystopian novel, made $32.5 million. Moviegoers are clearly not tired of dystopian films as The Maze Runner joins recent hits like The Hunger Games and Divergent in offering a grim, yet compelling view of the future. A Maze Runner sequel, called Scorch Trials, is already slated for September 18, 2015.

The Maze Runner made about $20 million more than A Walk Among the Tombstones, which made $13.1 million. This was a mediocre opening for the Liam Neeson and Dan Stevens thriller written and directed by Scott Frank. It was adapted from a Lawrence Block novel. The comedy, This is Where I Leave You, opened in third and made $11.9 million. It features many stars - including Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Jone Fonda, Adam Driver and Rose Byrne - but still failed to fill theaters.

No Good Dead took fourth place and made $10 million during its second weekend in theaters. It was followed by Dolphin Tale 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Let's Be Cops and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Guardians continues to hold on. It made another $5 million during the weekend, which was its 8th weekend in theaters. The film is still showing in over 2,800 theaters.
