Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig Are Inept Robbers in Masterminds Trailer

Here is the first teaser trailer for Masterminds, a comedy heist movie that is based on a true story. Zach Galifianakis plays Daivd Ghantt, a night guard at an armored truck company. His work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) convinces David to rob a vault of $17 million in cash.

The gang of inept criminals who pull off the heist is led by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson). Chambers and the rest of the gang set up Ghantt to do all the dirty work then get arrested for the crime while they run off with the money. They do manage to steal the cash, but the plan falls apart completely after that. For one thing, they can't resist spending all that cash which makes the cops' job much easier. David eventually figures out that his co-conspirators have double crossed him and sets out to make things right.

The film was directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite; Nacho Libre). It also stars Jason Sudeikis as hit man Mike McKinney and Saturday Night Live castmembers Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon as cops. The trailer is funny and sets up the premise that these are not the brightest criminals in the world.

The film is based on one of the largest cash robberies in U.S. history. In 1997 the Loomis Fargo & Company in Charlotte, North Carolina, was robbed of $17.3 million. Many people were eventually arrested and most of the cash was recovered, although the movie has a very different ending given that it's a comedy.
