Maleficent Wins Weekend Box Office With $70 Million Opening

Maleficent won the box office this weekend with a $70 million opening. The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora. It is the biggest opening film ever for Angelina.
Maleficent was followed by X-Men: Days of Future Past, which added a solid $32.6 million during its second weekend in theaters. It was followed by the Seth MacFarlane comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West, which made $17 million in 3,158 theaters. Godzilla came in fourth and made another $12.25 million in its third weekend in theaters.
Godzilla was followed by Blended, Neighbors, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Million Dollar Arm. You can view the complete box office chart here.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is about to overtake The Lego Movie as the top-earning film of 2014, so far. It has made $255 million and is only about $10,000 shy from taking the lead. Films this year tend to be opening very strong, but fading quickly due to all the strong competition each weekend from new opening films.
