Lucy Tops Hercules to Win Weekend Box Office

Lucy, a science fiction action thriller starring Scarlett Johansson, won the box office with a $44 million opening weekend. The film is written and directed by Luc Besson. Scarlett has proven her ability to excel in action film through her role as the Black Widow in The Avengers. She has also garnered new fans from the Avengers who turned out in droves to see her in Lucy. Deadline reports that the $44 million opening is the second biggest ever for a French-produced film.
The Hercules remake starring Dwayne Johnson also did well in theaters. It brought in $29 million during its first weekend in theaters but was not able to defeat Lucy. The film directed by Brett Ratner also stars Ian McShane and John Hurt.
Hercules was followed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which remains strong in theaters and added $16.4 million during its third weekend in theaters. Planet of the Apes was followed by The Purge: Anarchy and Planes: Fire & Rescue.
Another film opening this weekend was And So It Goes. The Rob Reiner comedy drama stars Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton. It opened with $4.5 million and finished 8th. It had a low $2,583 per theater average. The thriller A Most Wanted Man, which is based on a John le Carre novel, also opened this weekend. It made $2.7 million in 361 theaters for a strong $7,526 per theater average.
