The Lorax Tops John Carter to Win Weekend Box Office
Posted on March 11, 2012
The Lorax won the box office for the second weekend in a row. It made $39 million to bring its total box office gross to over $121 million. The Lorax is coming off its huge $70 million opening.
John Carter, which is based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, opened in second and made over $30 million. $30 million is normally considering a good opening for a movie, but John Carter had a $250 million budget, so a larger opening was expected. The overseas box office is very strong for John Carter at $70 million so far.
John Carter was followed by Project X which made $11.5 million in its second weekend in theaters. Silent House, starring Elizabeth Olsen, made $7 million and opened in fourth. Silent House was followed by Act of Valor and A Thousand Words.
Safe House and The Vow took the seventh and eighth places. These films, which opened five weeks ago, continue to perform well. Each film has made over $115 million. You can see the complete box office report for the weekend here.
