Lee Daniels' The Butler Wins Weekend Box Office
Posted on August 18, 2013
Lee Daniels' The Butler coasted to an easy victory at the box office this weekend. The film, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, made $25 million.
Three other opening films this weekend - Kick Ass 2, Jobs and Paranoia - did not generate good numbers at all. We're the Millers came and in second and made $17.8 million. Elysium was third with a take of $13.6 million during its second weekend in theaters.
Kick-Ass 2 delivered surprisingly low numbers for its opening weekend. It made just $13.6 million. Deadline reports that pre-release tracking had predicted the Kick-Ass sequel would be the number one film this weekend, so it is not clear what went wrong. Kick-Ass 2 was followed by Planes, which made $13.1 million and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, which made $8.3 million.
There was not much interest in the new Jobs movie starring Ashton Kutcher. The film, which opened in 7th place, made just $6.7 million and managed only $2,814 per theater. Paranoia was even worse. It made only $3.5 million in 2,459 theaters for a weak theater average of $2,459. You can find the complete box office report here.
