Kung Fu Panda 3 Wins Box Office for Second Straight Weekend
Posted on February 7, 2016
Kung Fu Panda 3 won the weekend box office with a $21 million opening. This was a 49% drop from its opening numbers last weekend. It was a weak weekend overall as the nation prepared for Super Bowl Sunday.
Hail, Caesar! had a lower than expected opening but still managed to finish in second place. It made just $11.4 million in 2,232 theaters. The star studded comedy features Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Scarlett Johannson, Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and others, but it received a bad C- CinemaScore.
Hail, Caesar! was followed by The Revenant and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Choice and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies followed. Both bombed with very weak openings. The Choice is an adaption of a Nicholas Sparks novel starring Benjamin Walker and Teresa Palmer. It made just $6 million and finished 5th. Moviegoers were not up for the zombie take on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, which made just $5.2 million.
Pride and Prejudice was followed by The Finest Hours, Ride Along 2, The Boy (2016), Dirty Grandpa and The 5th Wave. You can see the box office chart for the weekend here.
Next weekend should generate a much bigger box office with the arrival of both Deadpool and Zoolander 2.
