J.J. Abrams to Write and Direct Star Wars Episode IX

J.J. Abrams will return to write and direct Star Wars Episode IX. Abrams directed The Force Awakens which brought the Star Wars franchise back to movie theaters in 2015 and delighted fans. Star Wars returns to theaters on December 15 with The Last Jedi, which is written and directed by Rian Johnson. Episode IX will be the third film in the trilogy.
Abrams will co-write Episode IX with Chris Terrio. Terrio's credit include Argo and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy says in the announcement, "With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy."
Star Wars: Episode IX is slated to arrive in theaters on May 24, 2019.
