Matt Damon Returns in First Teaser for Jason Bourne

Posted on February 13, 2016

Matt Damon has finally returned to the Jason Bourne franchise, which is based on the bestelling thrillers by the late Robert Ludlum. Damon last played Bourne in 2007. Now he and directed Paul Greengrass have a story they're excited about and if the teaser trailer is any indication of what the film will be like, they've still got what it takes.

The teaser trailer opens with a really buffed Damon doing some street fighting and he is incredibly powerful. The images ramp up with lots of action and fighting, as well as shots of the CIA, which appears to once again be the bad guys. The voiceover has Bourne telling CIA agent Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles), "I know who I am, I remember everything." Parsons snaps back, "Remembering everything doesn't mean you know everything. The world is at war. We need the perfect weapon."

Damon told Entertainment Weekly that the film was inspired the Edward Snowden scandal. Snowdon's intentional release of confidential information let America and the world know just how pervasive U.S. surveillance of American citizens really is. Snowden is currently in exile in Russia, but would like to come home. That's not going to happen unless he's willing to disappear into a prison and never come out.

Damon explains, "Since 2007, so much has changed. There’s been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyber warfare and civil liberties -- things that are slowly coming to into the zeitgeist as we start to grapple with what the future is going to look like. And so those are kind of somewhere in the stew of our story." The film has two new characters played by Tommy Lee Jones, who is with the CIA, and Alicia Vikander, whose role has not been described yet.
