Insurgent Tops Cinderella to Win Weekend Box Office

Posted on March 22, 2015

Insurgent managed to fend off Cinderella to win the box office this weekend. Insurgent is the second film in the dystopian Divergent series. Insurgent, which has an A- CinemaScore, made $54 million which closely matches Divergent's $54.6 million opening last year. The was an impressive feat considering Cinderella was coming off a strong $70 million opening weekend.

Insurgent was followed by Cinderella which made $34.4 million during its second weekend in theaters. The live-action Disney film has now made $122 million after just two weekends in theaters. Cinderella was followed by Run All Night, which made $5 million during its second weekend in theaters.

The Gunman, a thriller starring Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Idris Elba, bombed in theaters this weekend. It made just $5 million in 2,816 theaters for a very low $1,779 per theater average. Do You Believe?, a drama starring Mira Sorvino and Sean Astin, also had a weak $4 million opening but had nearly twice the per theater average as The Gunman. The Gunman has a B- CinemaScore.

This weekend overall would have been very weak if were not for the hit movies Insurgent and Cinderella. The films will be up against the Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart comedy Get Hard next weekend. Also opening next weekend is Home, a funny looking animated comedy about an alien starring Jim Parsons and Rihanna.
