How to Train Your Dragon Wins Box Office, Kick-Ass Struggles

Posted on April 18, 2010

How to Train Your Dragon clawed its way back to the top of the box office during its fourth weekend in theatres. The film was also number one when it opened four weeks ago. The film has been well-received by both critics and moviegoers. It made $20 million to bring its box office total to over $158 million.

Kick-Ass received a lot of buzz but the violent R-rated film failed to get many people in theaters. Roger Ebert called Kick-Ass "morally reprehensible" in his review. Ebert writes, "A movie camera makes a record of whatever is placed in front of it, and in this case, it shows deadly carnage dished out by an 11-year-old girl, after which an adult man brutally hammers her to within an inch of her life."

Kick-Ass came in just shy of the $20 million made by Dragon. The numbers are preliminary so the final result could change. The ticket sales will for Kick-Ass will still be considered a dissapointment even if Kick-Ass ends up winning the weekend.

Date Night made a strong showing in its second week in theaters. It finished third and added another $17.3 to its total, bringing its gross to nearly $50 million. Date Night was followed by Death at a Funeral and Clash of the Titans. You can see the complete box office chart on boxofficemojo.com.
