Posted on December 17, 2012
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey set a December record with an $84.6 million opening this weekend. Box Office Mojo notes that the previous record was I Am Legend's $77.2 million December opening in 2007. The Hobbit has also already made $138 million from the foreign box office to bring its total global take to over $222 million. The Hobbit's box office is likely to grow much larger as the word of mouth from the film is very good.
Coming in a distant second was Rise of the Guardians, which made another $7 million. It was followed by Lincoln, Skyfall, Life of Pi and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. You can find the complete box office report here.
