Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Dominates Box Office With Monster $145 Million Opening

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 was the top film in theaters this weekend. The sequel is smash hit with its $145 million opening in the U.S. It made over $135 million more than the second top earning film. Guardians 2 also already made nearly $300 million overseas. It has an A CinemaScore.

Guardians 2 will now try to chase down Beauty and the Beast which has made nearly $500 million in theaters and is the top grossing film for 2017 so far. Guardians was followed by The Fate of the Furious which added just $8 million during its fourth weekend in theaters. It has made $207 million so far. The Boss Baby finished third and How to be a Latin Lover finished fourth.

Beauty and the Beast continues to draw moviegoers and added $4.9 million during its eight weekend in theaters. It came in fifth place. It was followed by The Circle, Baahubali 2, Gifted, Going in Style, Smurfs: The Lost Village and Born in China.

Guardians 2 was the only wide release this weekend. You can find the box office chart for the weekend here. King Arthur and Snatched will face the tough task of dethroning Guardians this coming weekend.
