Gravity Tops Box Office for Second Consecutive Weekend

Gravity won the box office for the second consecutive weekend. It made another $43 million over the weekend to bring its box office to $122 million after just two weekends. Gravity was followed by Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks. Captain Phillips tells the story of Captain Richard Phillips and an attack by Somali pirates. It had a strong opening with a theater average of $8,516. It made $25.7 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 made $13.7 million during its third weekend in theaters and finished third.

Machete Kills was the second wide release this weekend. It performed poorly. It made just $3.8 million in 2,538 theaters giving it a very weak $1,512 per theater average. $1,512 per theater is especially bag for an opening weekend. Machete Kills was followed by Runner Runner, Prisoners, Insidious Chapter 2 and Rush.
