G.I. Joe: Retaliation Wins Easter Weekend Box Office
Posted on April 1, 2013
G.I. Joe: Retaliation topped the box office over Easter weekend with a $40 million take and a great $10,800 per theater average. This plus an international box office of over $80 million makes a sequel likely.
The film was originally slated to arrive in theaters last year. The decision to move it to 2013 appears to have been a wise one.
The Croods followed up its strong opening with an equally impressive second weekend of $26.7 million. Tyler Perry's Temptation came in third with a $21.6 million opening and a very strong per theater average of over $10,500 per theater.
Olympus Has Fallen finished 4th with a $14 million take during its second weekend in theaters. It was followed by Oz The Great and Powerful, which is now just short of the $200 million mark.
The Host, starring Saoirse Ronan, did not perform well, which means author Stephenie Meyer will not see a Twilight-like repeat in theaters for her Host book series. The Host made $10 million on a low per theater average of just $3,310. You can find the complete box office report here.
