First Photograph of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl Released

DC Comics has released the first photographs of actress Melissa Benoist as Supergirl. Melissa plays Kara Zor-El in the upcoming CBS television series.

The Supergirl costume was designed by Colleen Atwood. She is a three-time Oscar winner who also designed the costumes for The Flash and Arrow. The costume has darker colors than the one Helen Slater wore in the 1984 Supergirl movie. Colleen says in a statement, "In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today."

The Supergirl series on CBS is being produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. It will also star Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers. Other stars include David Harewood, Faran Thir, Dean Cain and Helen Slater. Helen's role in the series has not yet been announced.

Melissa Benoist is best known for her role on Glee. She will star in The Longest Ride with Scott Eastwood in April. Melissa also shared the costume photograph on Twitter. She said in her tweet, "THIS. I still can't believe I am wearing the House of El coat of arms."
