Exodus: Gods and Kings Tops Weekend Box Office

Exodus: Gods and Kings won the box office this weekend. The film starring Christian Bale as Moses made $24.5 million during its opening weekend. The film averaged about $7,000 per theater. It is faring better overseas where it has already made $50 million.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 finished second and made another $12.8 million to bring its box office gross to over $277 million. Another $56 million and it will pass Guardians of the Galaxy as the top film of the year. The third entry in The Hunger Games franchise has also been a blockbuster overseas. Deadline reports that Mockingjay has passed the $1 billion mark at the international box office. All three films in the franchise have now accomplished this feat.

Mockingjay was followed by The Penguins Of Madagascar, which made $7.2 million during its third weekend in theaters. Penguins was followed by Top Five, a comedy directed by Chris Rock. The film stars Rock, Rosario Dawson, Gabrielle Union and J.B. Smoove. It opened in fourth with $7.2 million and a strong per theater average of $7,365.

Top Five was followed by Big Hero 6, Interstellar, Horrible Bosses 2 and Dumb and Dumber To. You can view the weekend box office chart here.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is expected to win the box office this coming weekend. Other opening films include Annie and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.
