Divergent Wins Weekend Box Office
Posted on March 25, 2014
Divergent won the weekend box office with a $56 million weekend. It was a big debut for the dystopian series starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James. It ensures there will be a sequel. The new two entries in the series, Insurgent and Allegiant, are slated for 2015 and 2016.
Divergent was followed by Muppets Most Wanted, which opened in second place with a take of $16.5 million. This opening was smaller than expected.
Muppets Most Wanted was followed by Mr. Peabody & Sherman and 300: Rise of an Empire. God's Not Dead opened in fifth and made $8.5 million in 780 for a $10,979 per theater average. This was a strong opening but its impressive per theater average was dwarfed by The Grand Budapest Hotel, which averaged over $22,000 per theater and made nearly $7 million in only 304 theaters.
Frozen continues its path to $400 million. It is now just under $3 million shy of the milestone. You can view the complete box office report here.
