District 9 Tops the Box Office
Posted on August 17, 2009
District 9 topped the box office this weekend. Peter Jackson produced the low-budget science fiction film directed by relatively unknown director Neill Blomkamp. The film is quickly winning over fans and critics. District 9 scored 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. We saw the film and enjoyed every minute.
G.I. Joe slipped to the number #2 spot but made another $22 million. The Time Traveler's Wife opened at #3 with a box office take of $18 million. Nikke Finke says that was a little less than expected for the time traveling romance. Julie & Julia continues to do well and made another $12 million. Bandslam did not do as well as expected despite great reviews - it made only $2.2 million despite opening in over 2,100 theaters. Maybe it will fare better in its second week. A new animated Disney film named Ponyo did well. It made $3.58 million in just 900+ theatres.
