Posted on February 14, 2016
Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, dominated the box office this weekend with a monster $135 million opening. This is the biggest February opening and the top opening for an R-rated film. It is also another huge hit for Marvel. Deadpool has an A CinemaScore.
Deadpool was followed by Kung Fu Panda 3, which made nearly $20 million during its third weekend in theaters. Kung Fu was followed by the How to Be Single comedy starring Rebel Wilson, Dakota Johnson and Leslie Mann. It had a modest $18.75 million opening.
Zoolander 2 opened in fourth and made $15.7 million. The comedy starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson has just a C+ CinemaScore. The $15.7 million opening was very similar to the box office opening for the first film in 2001.
Zoolander 2 was followed by The Revenant, Hail, Caesar!, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Choice and Ride Along 2. You can view the complete box office report here.
With its strong opening there is likely to be a Deadpool sequel. Deadpool has a good chance to win the box office next weekend. It will be up against Race, Risen and The Witch.
