Dev Patel Creates an Advanced Robot in Trailer for Chappie

Posted on November 9, 2014

Neill Blomkamp (District 9) explores the world of sentient robots in his new film Chappie. Dev Patel plays a programmer who creates a robot who can learn and feel emotions. Named Chappie, the robot must grow up, interact with both friendly and hostile humans and determine his future.

Neill Blomkamp has created a coming age story about a gifted child. The only difference is that he is actually a robot. Sharlto Copley plays Chappie using motion capture technology. He gives the robot a gently, fun-loving nature. He watches cartoons, he gently strokes a dog's head and learns his name. when Chappie is kidnapped by criminals, things look a bit grim for the friendly AI. Neill Blomkamp movies always seem to have such sad undertones. We'll be bringing Kleenex to this one.

Hugh Jackman, sporting facial hair and an evil mullet, plays Vincent who thinks AIs are much too unpredictable and dangerous to have around. Sigourney Weaver, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Miranda Frigon, Robert Hobbs, Brandon Auret and Ninja co-star in the film. Blomkamp wrote the screenplay with Terri Tatchell. This is the same writing team from Distrcit 9.

Chappie is set for release on March 6, 2015. Take a look:
