Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett Fall in Love in First Teaser Trailer for Carol

Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett star in the first teaser trailer for Carol. The film is set during the 1950s and is based on the novel, The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith.

Rooney Mara plays Therese Belivet, a young department store clerk in Manhattan who falls in love with Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), an older woman who is unhappily married to Harge Aird (Kyle Chandler). Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, Cory Michael Smith, Carrie Brownstein and John Margaro.

The novel was published in 1952. Due to the forbidden subject matter author Patricia Highsmith published the book under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. Ms. Highsmith was known as a suspense novelist: she wrote Strangers on a Train. Ms. Highsmith was inspired by a real life story in which a wealthy socialite lost custody of her son in a divorce when a private investigator uncovered her lesbian affair.

The film was directed by Todd Haynes. Phyllis Nagy adapted the book into a screenplay. The trailer is beautifully shot, although it's pretty short on plot. It's not clear whether the film will follow the novel's much-loved plot (it sold one million copies in paperback when it was published) or throw in a twist. The book is known for being the first lesbian novel that had a happy ending. Usually something ghastly happened to the gay characters at the end of the story. Take a look:
