Captain America: Civil War's First Trailer Introduced by Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr.

Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans were guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live to reveal the first poster for Captain America: Civil War and to show the first teaser trailer for the film. After the events of Age of Ultron, the government wants all superheroes to register and reveal their secret identities. In the comic books Captain America/Steve Rogers opposes registration as a violation of American principles of freedom and equality.

But Tony Stark/Iron Man supports registration. This leads to a full on superhero war in which the Avengers must choose sides. In the first trailer we see hints of this when William Hurt's character General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross says that some people thing Captain America isn't a hero, he's a vigilante. To complicate matters, Steve's old friend Bucky is in a lot of trouble for the damage he caused as the Winter Soldier when he was under the control of Hydra.

Steve will not allow his old friend to be arrested and locked up by SHIELD. The trailer is intentionally chaotic, so we can't tell exactly what the plot is -- other than the broad outlines. In the trailer Captain America is backed up by Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Iron Man is backed by Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and War Machine (Don Cheadle). The new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, appears in the film but it's not clear what side he's on. Scarlett Johnasson returns as Black Widow and in the trailer she advises Steve to stay out out of the confrontation between SHIELD and Bucky. But Steve doesn't listen to her.
